I have a special liking for hotels. Although they are familiar ground, it is not common to find a hotel whose memory will stay with me and be cherished after I pack my suitcases and leave. Comfortable and cozy is the prerequisite. But to be remembered, to make me want to go back, much more is required.
I was initially attracted by the name : Hotel del Teatre. It is located at the small village of Regencós, in the region of Embordà Costa Brava. It is less than an hour drive, 40 km/25 miles from the capital of the province, Girona, and from Girona airport.

Little more than an hour from Barcelona (90 km/56 miles). Regencós is off the road to Begur, actually 5 km/3miles away; 8 km/5 miles from the medieval village of Pals; 10 minutes from the fishing villages, beaches and coves of Sa Tuna, Aiguablava, Llafranc, Calella. The famous Castle Dali offered as a gift to Gala in Púbol is not far; this is one of the three locations of the ‘Dalí Triangle’ with Figueres (Theatre – Museum) and  Cadaqués
(Port-Lligat House museum). You can reach all three from here, but make sure about entrance details and times before you go there!
The medieval town of Peratallada, the Bisbal d’ Empordà, pottery centre and capital of the county Baix Empordà and the port of Palamós are nearby.

It is convenient to explore from here the fascinating region of Catalonia with the richness of cultural history and the diversity of landscape and activities ranging from golf courses to horse riding and aviation or simply indulge in spa or in culinary experiences.
If you want to be an adventurer and explorer this is the ideal ground. Do not worry about schedule. Just take your car, and hit the road. That’s what I did, the last week of September.Coming back in the afternoon at the Hotel you can rest around the garden and the swimming pool, or in the comfortable lounge, depending on the season, until it is time for dinner.

Then, you can dine at La Cuina del Theatre where you have excellent choices of Mediterranean gastronomy at very reasonable prices in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere served with the simplicity of real taste. You can enjoy your wine too, without thinking about driving.

The Story of Hotel del Teatre

The bell of the village church hits the hours. Hotel del Teatre is a 18^th century house renovated in 2003 by the interior designer from Barcelona, Sandra Tarruella specialized in hotels and restaurants. “Her style is recognizable for the minimal, the earth colors and the textures”.
Alicia Josa, director of Hotel del Teatre is available to answer my questions. Her husband is the chef Eduardo Puig. Together they run the hotel and the restaurant for two years now.

“The hotel used to be an old house, a family lived here and then added a restaurant. Some parts made by steel and glass, give the atmosphere of a cosmopolitan restaurant, like New York. It used to house the old theatre of the little village of Regencós which later was turned into a cinema. Now, to continue this tradition we play films and show photos of travel photographers in the actual stage where projections were made in the past. We also organize concerts one night a week the months of June and July”.

La Cuina del Teatre is frequented by people who have their second residence in the area, either foreigners or from Barcelona.  It is very well known for its cuisine.
Foreigners, English for example, prefer the premises for wedding celebrations. It can host at least 90 people in the interiors and around 60 outdoors. Alicia helps them to organize all required, as she used to do weddings in the past.

She can organize romantic nights for two. Couples range between 30-35 to 60 years old, but no age is excluded!

What is the concept Alicia? Would you describe Hotel del Theatre as a boutique hotel?

‘A charm hotel’, rather, ‘hoteles con encanto’, we call them in Spain. The hotel  with a personality that brings a story and keeps this story alive.

Tailor-made holidays in Catalonia

Asking Alicia which are the places she suggests me to visit we ran into another discussion. Some people find it difficult to just hang around the garden or the swimming pool, strolling the medieval towns, sitting at squares doing nothing in particular. Others just want to take advantage of their holidays to learn or to advance in some craft.
At the Hotel del Teatre Alicia organizes courses on ceramics, patchwork, cooking lessons, adjusted to the level and the demand of the guests.
“Visit to the farms where they make amazing cheeses, facilities to rent sailing trips to visit our “secret coast”, unexplored beaches where you can only arrive by sea. Balloon and aero plan rides over the Empordà landscape to enjoy a bird´s eye view.
Also Hotel del Teatre has mountain bikes for our clients, and we will guide you how to arrive through small rural roads surrounded by  sunflower fields to the closest medieval towns of Pals, Peratallada, Fontanilles and Palu satou, route of  approximately 2 hours ride from our hotel”.
I met a lot of bicyclists around in the area; it is so flat in a mild scenery of pine trees and cultivated fields. Tranquility and fresh air!
They can also arrange a guide tour for wine tasting in Peratallada or a bicycle ride with a personal trainer.

The Hotel and La Cuina del Theatre offer a number of imaginative choices, from  ‘lovers’ week-end’  to  ‘wellness massage’, with facial & body treatment for the ones who want to indulge or for the bride of the wedding celebration.
A conference room is also available, fully equipped for conventions.
Alicia has a bunch of information: she can advise on the cultural visits of the area, or the best places to eat.
Did you get an idea? Who does not want to go back to explore what was left unseen or not experienced this time?
Talking with Alicia I realize one of the secrets her hospitality is the  ‘personalized attitude’, the flexibility and willingness to meet the requirements and the budget of the guests. So, they want to come back and share their experiences with their friends and families.

Loyalty with the guests, loyalty with the personnel

The welcoming spirit was evident from the moment I stepped into the hotel, tired and thirsty from my long road trip. They had already informed me by email about certain details, like the closing time of the door, or that the restaurant will not be open and they will give me suggestions where to dine.

It is important to know what to expect. This way trust starts building even before you meet. In our days contact starts from the virtual reality.
In the next days I found out that the staff here works for years; from the atmosphere of easy going and unstressed caring you sense it.

Until now, the hotel is not open from November 3d to March 15^th. From June to August, the high season, it is occupied by families who are frequent guests and reserve long ahead. They hang around taking snacks around the pool with their swimming suits. Or go to the beaches and return in the afternoon.
The hotel has seven rooms to accommodate its rising clientele.

Expansion and adjustment to the demands of the times

Alicia tells me they are taking the house of the rector to turn it into four apartments, each   with a little kitchen and a living room suitable for families who want to cook. “In crisis people put batteries on, trying to find the harmony between price & quality”, in her own words.

Would you like to extend the period the hotel operates?

“Yes, we could stay open in November, December even the first months of the year. The restaurant is open on New Year’s Eve.  The Hotel is well equipped for winter. There is central heating, air conditioning with warm air. I wish people were less aware of the weather. There is plenty to do apart from the beaches if they stayed 3 to 4 days: bicycles, medieval towns, museums, walks ”.
To the long list mentioned above do not forget aviation, golf courses and horse riding!

Aesthetics with feeling

The prevailing yellow of the stone is balanced against the ceramic tiles of terracotta and the green that surrounds us. Textures and colors cohabitate in harmony emanating a feeling of serenity and peace that spreads inside and out in the garden.

Everything is chosen to compose a uniform identity to all spaces of the restaurant and the hotel, a personality that is contemporary, fresh and light, but well -grounded to Catalonia, the past, the landscape. The Mediterranean thyme from the garden sprinkles morning blessings to the tomatoes spread on my bread at breakfast. Expressions of being that evade the trendy and the temporal, the way fashionable can be. It also escapes the heaviness a castle made of stone is.

The lighting in the rooms and around the dining room of the restaurant is sophisticated and warm. The light wood against the darker furniture, the open ceiling beans against the gray steel and the glass of the large window screens; the old and the new create a bridge across the centuries.

My Hotel, my Castle

Any traveler and adventurer would agree that to go on exploring you need to have a castle to return at night. To sleep well, to eat well. To enjoy a good film from the big selection of DVDs of Hotel del Theatre.  To share everything  with good company.
A bunch of photos is what I can share with you now, and my long description. But when I close my eyes Hotel del Theatre is a spot in the universe where time and space envelop me. There, I sleep so deeply that when I open my eyes I do not remember where I came from.
And when I open the window the scenery is brand new and so old, recognizable by my soul, frequented in my dreams. It is when I feel light, weightless as if the miles of my time machine have turned zero and I am ready to start again. It is when I suddenly feel wiser, too.

 Los  hoteles son mi afición. Aunque  el terreno  es  familiar, cuando parto con mis maletas,  no encuentro facilmente  un hotel que me impresionará tanto como  para pensar en regresar, gracias a la amabilidad y comodidad ofrecida.
Al principio, me impresionó su nombre: Hotel del Teatre. Se sitúa en el pueblo medieval de  Regencós, en la región de Empordà Costa Brava, a  menos de una hora en coche del aeropuerto de Girona, la capital de la provincia (unos 40 km o 25 millas). El hotel se encuentra a una hora y cuarto de  Barcelona (90 km o 56 millas). Regencós se sitúa en el desvío de la carretera al Begur a unos  de 5 km/ 3 millas de  distancia y  a unos  8km/5 mil.  del  pueblo medieval de Pals. Muy cerca de este hotelito a tan solo 10 minutos, se situan recónditas playas,   aldeas de pescadores, y las pequeñas  calas de Sa Tuna, Aiguablava, Llafranc y Calella. El famoso castillo que  Dali ofreció como regalo  a Gala en Púbol  no está lejos, y es  una de las citas obligadas del famoso ‘triangulo Daliliano’, siendo los otros dos: El Museo Dalí en Figueras y La Casa del Pintor en Port-Lligat. Antes de visitar alguno de estos lugares, asegúrense del horario de visita!
La ciudad medieval de Peratallada en La Bisbal d’ Empordá – centro de la alfarería y capital del  Baix Empordá- y el Puerto marítimo de Palamós también están cerca. Se trata de una rica  región de Cataluña que les ofrecerá toda su historia cultural, una gran  diversidad del paisaje y múltiples actividades para todos los gustos ( campos de golf, montar a caballo , vueltas en globo o avioneta) o simplemente  sumergirse en sus spas o deleitarlos con experiencias gastronómicas. Es la Tierra ideal para explorarla y descubrirla.  Es importante guiarse por los planos y asesorarse bien antes de salir para no perderse nada!
De vuelta al Hotel, al atardecer pueden relajarse en el jardín o en la piscina o en la comoda sala de estar hasta la hora de la cena, depende de la época. Después  pueden cenar en La Cuina del Teatre con excelentes opciónes de cocina mediterranea a razonables precios en un ambiente confortable y elegante, servidos con la simplicidad basada en una buena materia prima,  incluso, podrán  disfrutar de un buen vino sin pensar en conducir más tarde.

La Historia hacía atrás, Hotel del Teatre

La campana de la iglesia de Regencós toca las horas. El Hotel del Teatre es una casa del siglo dieciocho renovada en el año 2003 por la diseñadora de interiores Sandra Torroella de Barcelona especializada en hoteles y restaurantes. ‘Su estilo es reconocible por el minimalismo, los colores terrenales y la textura’.
Alicia Josa, directora del Hotel del Teatre, está disponible para responder  mis preguntas. Su esposo es el chef  Eduardo Puig. Ambos llevan juntos trabajando en este proyecto los últimos dos años  ‘El Hotel era una antigua casa de pueblo donde vivía una familia. El restaurante se reformó después.  El restaurante ha sido reconvertido con “mucho gusto”, donde materiales tales como el acero, hierro forjado y  amplios ventanales de vidrio crean una auténtica  atmosfera  cosmopolita, como si se tratase de un local en Nueva York. La casa se habia utilizado  para alojar el antiguo teatro de Regencós que  más tarde se transformó en cine. Ahora, para continuar esta tradición, organizamos proyecciónes de películas y fotos de viajes en el mismo escenario de antaño. También, organizamos conciertos en directo. Estos acontecimientos tienen lugar  los viernes y  domingos durante  los meses veraniegos’.
La Cuina del Teatre es frecuentada por gente que tiene una segunda residencia en la región, tanto extranjera como barcelonesa. “Es muy famoso por su cocina”.  “Les sorprendería la gran cantidad de peticiones de extranjeros que recibimos anualmente para celebrar ceremonias nupciales “. Nuestra máxima capacidad es de 130 comensales, ofreciendo amplios aperitivos en nuestros jardines. Alicia les ayuda en la organización  ya que lleva 10 años dedicándose a  bodas. También organizan  ‘pack Lovers’ románticos. Las parejas que vienen tienen normalmente de  35 a 60 años de edad, pero nadie está excluido.

Cuál es el concepto, Alicia? Describiría el Hotel del Teatre como un ‘hotel boutique’?

Más bien como  ‘un hotel de encanto’, como decimos en España. Un hotel con personalidad  que tiene su propia historia y la mantiene viva.

Vacaciones personalizadas, adaptadas a todos los públicos en Cataluña

Preguntandole  a Alicia qué nos propone, llegamos a la conclusión que ella se adapta a cada una de las personas, desde aquellas que buscan la tranquilidad y tan solo quieren descansar y que las cuiden, a muchas otras que quieren convertir su vacación en una experiencia, práctica o habilidad.
Por eso Alicia organiza en el Hotel cursos de ceramica, patchwork  y  cocina adaptados  a los   niveles y necesidades de los visitantes.
‘Visitas a granjas donde fabrican quesos sabrosos,  posibilidad de alquilar embarcaciones para visitar ‘lugares ocultos y playas escondidas cuyo único acceso es el mar, vuelos en globo o avioneta   para disfrutar de una vista panorámica única. También el Hotel del Teatre dispone de bicicletas de montaña, con o sin guía,  para   aquellos que quieran pedalear por los agradables senderos que les llevarán desde el hotel hasta pueblos  medievales  tales como Pals, Peratallada, Palau sator y Fontanilles  atravesando rutas rurales y campos de girasoles.
Yo personalmente  encontré muchos ciclistas en la región. Paisaje llano de pinos y  otros cultivos. Aire limpio y  tranquilidad absoluta!Pueden organizar también una visita a Peratallada con un guía que les explicará tradiciones de sus gentes y les llevará a hacer una cata de vinos por sus restaurantes más típicos.
El Hotel y La Cuina del Teatre ofrecen una amplia serie de opciones creativas como por ejemplo  ‘fines de semana románticos’ y carta de todo tipo de  masajes para todos los bolsillos.
Dispone también de una sala de conferencias completamente equipada.
Alicia puede plenamente aconsejar  sobre guias culturales y buenos restaurantes en la región .
Y ahora ¿Quién se resiste a no visitar este hotel?
Hablando con Alicia me doy cuenta que uno de los secretos de su hospitalidad  es que ella misma es ‘el interés personificado’ para que todos sus clientes se lo pasen bien. Por eso ellos suelen repetir con familiares o amigos.

Fiel personal, fieles visitantes

El aire hospitalario fue presente desde mi llegada al  Hotel. Al llegar cansada, un detalle fue que anteriormente a mi llegada ya sabía detalles sobre  la organización y el funcionamiento del hotel (por ejemplo, a qué hora cierre la recepción o en caso de que su restaurante estuviera cerrado, donde podía ir a cenar).
Es importante que  conozcamos todas estas cosas, para que nuestras expectativas se correspondan con la realidad. Así se crea confianza antes del  primer encuentro. En nuestra época el contacto  empieza  con  la realidad virtual.
Los días siguientes descubrí que el personal del hotel es el mismo desde hace varios años,  eso explica la atmosfera cuidadosa. El Hotel está cerrado  de Noviembre hasta el 15 de Marzo. Desde  Junio hasta Agosto está lleno de familias  que vienen a menudo  y  reservan  con mucha antelación para no tener sorpresas. Se divierten  relajándose en  la piscina  o van a las playas cercanas  y vuelven  por la tarde.
El Hotel dispone siete habitaciónes y cada año aumenta el número de sus clientes .

Expansión  del edificio, adaptación a las necesidades  de hoy

Alicia me comenta que están reformando La Casa del Bisbat, para convertirla en   cuatro nuevos  apartamentos, cada uno con su pequeña cocina y la sala de estar,  adecuados para familias con niños. ‘Ahora, con la crisis,  la gente busca e intenta  encontrar la relación armonica entre calidad y precio’, piensa ella, sin tener que renunciar a sus vacaciones.

Intentan prolongar la estacionalidad del Hotel por algunos meses?

Creo  que  nuestro hotel podría permanecer abierto de Noviembre hasta  los primeros meses del año. Este año, es el primero, que por reclamo de nuestros clientes vamos a abrir tanto el hotel como el restaurante para fin de año.
El Hotel dispone de calefacción central y está bien equipado para afrontar el invierno. Esta región, al ser propia de veraneo, está totalmente condicionada al clima. En muchas ocasiones, si no hace sol, la gente no sabe qué hacer, siendo esto una tontería ya que la propia zona ofrece una diversidad de actividades tanto deportivas como culturales durante todo el invierno que no te las acabas!

Estética  y emoción

El  amarillo de la piedra y la terracota del suelo  predominan y  harmonizan con el verde del ambiente. Texturas y colores  coexisten de manera única  y emiten una sensación  muy  pacífica y tranquila  en el interior y el jardín.
En los dormitorios y en el comedor la luz entra de forma clara y nítida con sensación de paz. Mobiliario con maderas cálidas más actuales combinan perfectamente con el mobiliario más antiguo, las vigas del techo en contraste con  el gris acero y  los paneles de cristal, lo antiguo con  el  moderno crean un puente sólido a travès  los siglos.
Todo ha sido seleccionado de modo que el lugar desprenda un total equilibrio con una calidez que gusta a todos los públicos. Carácter moderno, fresco y leve en Cataluña.  Expresiones fuera de lo efímero, como puede ser lo moderno.
Para desayunar el conocido “pa amb tomaquet” y en el restaurante, platos decorados con ramas de tomillo y lavanda, una auténtica bendición.

Mi Hotel, mi Castillo

Cada viajero/a  así como cada aventurero aceptarán que para continuar sus exploraciónes,  un ‘castillo’ donde poder regresar por las tardes es absolutamente necesario.  Dormir bien, comer bien, disfrutar de una película (el Hotel dispone de 200 DVD´s),  todo esto  compartido con buena compañia, qué más se puede pedir?
En cuanto a mí,  solo me queda compartir con ustedes éstas fotos  y mi detallada descripción.
Cierro mis ojos y  siento que mi posición en el universo,el tiempo y el espacio que me envuelven está el Hotel del Teatre. Allí  duermo tan profundamente que cuando abro mis ojos no me acuerdo de donde vengo. El paisaje que veo por la ventana es completamente nuevo  y viejo al mismo tiempo, mi alma lo reconoce, es el punto donde voy a menudo en mis sueños. Entonces  no tengo  peso, me siento  ligera y no soy consciente del tiempo. “Acabo de trasladarme allí otra vez, y esto cada vez, me hace más sabia”.
