The Fairy Tales of Aunt Lena

For those who have missed her Aunt Lena was telling tales on the Greek radio. She was also writing fairy tales.
Her name is engraved on the plate lying on the grass of the small garden across ‘ELENA ‘s Maternity Home’ in Athens and opposite the square with the marble statue representing ‘The Mother’ – she is sitting with a baby in her arms and a child standing beside her. The white marble is sparkling of purity.
For the storyteller aunt Lena opposite they have not carved a head, let alone a bust, though she has been feeding with her stories generations of children. How many of the residents in the are or the passers-by have noticed the inscription?

‘Here stands the storyteller’.
A security man approaches me:
“Do not take pictures Miss,” he says softly, his voice a whisper.
“Who? Aunt Lena?” I ask astonished by the ‘Miss’, a title I have been excluded from for some decades already.
“Do not speak loudly”, he says.
I nod imitating his conspiratorial expression. I understand it’s illegal to pay respects to storytellers.
He indicates with this finger the residence of the U.S. Ambassador at the corner.
I smile and move away.
I do not worry about the storytellers, someone will guard them from oblivion. Even by chance.

Τα Παραμύθια της Θείας Λένας

Για όσους δεν την πρόλαβαν η θεία Λένα έλεγε παραμύθια στο ραδιόφωνο. Κι έγραφε παραμύθια.
Μνημονεύεται σε μια πλακέτα ξαπλωμένη στο γρασίδι στο παρκάκι απέναντι από το ‘Μαιευτήριο της Έλενας’. Θα δείτε μόλις διασχίσετε την πλατεία με την μαρμάρινη αναπαράσταση της Μητέρας – είναι καθιστή με ένα μωρό στην αγκαλιά κι ένα παιδάκι όρθιο δίπλα της. Το λευκό μάρμαρο αστράφτει από καθαρότητα.

Για την παραμυθού πάλι δεν έφτασε το μάρμαρο για μια αξιοπρεπή προτομή ούτε κουβέντα για μπούστο. Αν και με τις ιστορίες της έθρεψε γενιές παιδιών. Κάποιοι από τους περίοικους και λίγοι παρατηρητικοί περαστικοί πιθανώς να έχουν προσέξει τη στήλη

“Ενθάδε κείται η παραμυθού”.

Με πλησιάζει ένας σεκιουριτάς:
«Μην βγάζετε φωτογραφία δεσποινίς», λέει μαλακά, σχεδόν ψιθυριστά.
«Ποιον, τη θεία Λένα;» ρωτάω έκπληκτη, τόσο για την απαγόρευση, όσο για την προσφώνηση ‘δεσποινίς’, αν και απευθύνεται σε μια ώριμη κυρία.
«Μην μιλάτε δυνατά», μου λέει.
Γνέφω συνωμοτικά. Καταλαβαίνω, είναι παράνομο να φυλάς παραμυθάδες στις μέρες μας.
Δείχνει με το δάκτυλο την κατοικία του Αμερικανού πρέσβη στην Αθήνα στη γωνία.
Xαμογελώ κι απομακρύνομαι.
Δεν ανησυχώ για τους παραμυθάδες. Όλο και κάποιος θα τους φυλάει από τη λήθη. Έστω κι εκ παραδρομής.
